It’s all well and good creating a blog to promote your business, but it’s not something you can just build, leave, and hope people will come to. If you really want to make the effort of building a blog worthwhile, then you need to make it engaging.
An engaging blog is not only more likely to be read by potential customers, but it’s also far more likely to be shared — free promotion! It’s also one of the top ways to build your digital presence. Here are five ways to make your blog more engaging and boost those numbers.
We are going to give you two examples of titles here, so you can decide which one you’d rather click:
- How to make money online
- 16 quick and easy ways to make money online
While the two titles are offering the same type of content, essentially, there is one that is definitely more exciting than the other. According to one report, 36% of people prefer list-based headlines with a number in them.
There are plenty of other clever tricks for your titles, including keeping them to between 5-9 words and making them very, very clear. Brush up on your headline writing skills to bring in more readers to your blog.
Once you have a catchy title people want to click on, it’s time to engage them with your content. The fact of the matter is this: people only really skim-read blogs. In fact, 43% of people admit that they skim-read blog posts and so it’s important to take this into account when you’re writing yours.
Separate the content with interesting subheadings and make them easier for people to read quickly. Split up long paragraphs, include photos and videos (more on that later), and keep those readers engaged. You will also want to make sure your content is well written, free from errors, and actually provides valuable insight to keep people reading.
Images and videos
As mentioned, people only ever really skim-read blog posts. This means you’re going to need to capture their attention in as many different ways as you can. Adding images and videos to your blog is a great way to keep readers engaged.
There are several ways you can go about this, depending on your time and budget. You could simply use Creative Commons images and share other people’s videos if you don’t have a lot of time or money to spare.
However, if you really want to keep people engaged then try making your own. This will also help enhance your branding efforts, as you can include your own logos, colors, products, and so on.
Selling your wares
If your business is in the e-commerce realm then blogging is going to mean big bucks for you — if you do it well! You can use your blog posts to link to products or services within your online store, which is excellent for two reasons. One, it creates interlinks which Google loves for search engine optimization. Secondly, it provides readers an easy way to buy your products or services. If you’re using a platform like Shopify with its own blog attached, then it’ll be even easier to link from your blog to your wares!
A call to action
Finally, it may sound silly, but are you asking readers to comment, share or browse your site? Every engaging blog should end with a call-to-action. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Ask people to share the post if they feel it was useful. Ask for their opinions in the comments. Encourage them to get in touch with you for a quote. Readers are far more likely to do one of these things if you ask them to.
By using these five tips in your next blog post, you should hopefully see an increase in engagement across the board; from social media shares to sales. Give it a try and see whether it’s effective for you. Do you have any other tips to add to the list? Let us know!
